If operational IT is managing the day-to-day (keeping things running), then strategic IT is the time you spend looking to the future, adding business value, digitally transforming and supporting business growth. The question is, how do you effectively split your resource and budget between these two types of IT? If your future state (where your company and IT model will be in 24 months’ time) is likely to be similar to your current state, it’s probable that most of your time will spent on operational IT.
