What leaders are cutting, protecting, and prioritising when budgets are flat, and costs keep climbing.

The Accomplish More community’s Summer 2026 Speakeasy brought together senior leaders currently managing flat budgets against rising costs to talk through where the pressure is actually landing and what they are doing about it.

Discussion moved from a shared instinct, cut people first because headcount is the easiest lever to pull, through what it actually takes to protect value instead: reframing spending arguments in language finance will act on, being honest about what deprioritised work quietly costs later, and leading visibly through the cuts that do happen anyway.

The group’s closing point was that none of it holds unless efficiency gains outlast the project that built them; a gain that doesn’t stick doesn’t close the budget gap, it just delays the next round of cutting. The group’s shared view was that cost discipline under pressure is not really a finance exercise. It is a leadership one: knowing what creates value well enough to protect it and being willing to say so in terms the organisation will actually listen to.
